ICM 1/48 Ki-21-Ia Sally (48196)

This review will tell you more about ICM 1/48 Ki-21-Ia Sally (48196). As you remember, we already reviewed initial release of this kit in different version, and now get an earlier type. Overall idea is the same - large Japanese bomber in popular scale. Packaging is typical for ICM, so all parts come in one plastic bag. There are 270 parts which should assemble into a model with impressive 471mm wingspan and 339mm length. All this sounds like a fun kit to build, so let's open everything and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with the previous "b" version.

First frame is dedicated to wing halves and interior floor. All parts have guiding elements which will be helpful while working with such large bits.

Don't be fooled by the scale of this kit. There are a lot of small parts which will require careful installation on the model.

It is cool to see both engines included by ICM. Yes, manufacturer doesn't show the open option in the assembly manual, but it won't be difficult to come up with display idea.

Fuselage halves are molded on the separate frame. We still get molded in door, so all the hope for displaying interior through the clear parts. Overall quality looks great out of the box.

Large wing has separately molded ailerons, but flaps are molded in. I guess you will have to find some aftermarket PE in order to have dropped flaps.

Today's type gets slightly different tail section with no gunner place in this area. Overall design is still the same, and separate tail fin will be inserted into fuselage halves.

Clear frame is packed into separate plastic bag. Molding quality is gorgeous here, and I like the fact that ICM included masks templates for those canopy sections.

All decals fit onto one sheet. Overall printing quality looks great. There are 5 marking options from different time periods. You can see them on the photo below.

Assembly manual is typical for this brand. I show all pages in the video-review.

Today's kit should be already available for purchase. In my opinion it is a great choice for modelers who would like to copy the famous Japanese bomber in its initial version. Overall features look great out of the box, and I think we will see some aftermarket as well. Keep in mind that such large build is more for experienced modelers, who are ready to work with that big aircraft. It should be fine in building process, but will definitely take some space on your table.
