ICM 1/48 Ki-21-Ib Sally (48195)

Today's review is dedicated to ICM 1/48 Ki-21-Ib Sally (48195). Straightaway I would like to point your attention at the scale of this kit. We get completely new-tooled plastic which will give some modelers a chance to build a bigger "Sally". As you remember, initial set was made in 1/72 scale, and now we get one step bigger. Packaging is typical for this brand, so all frames come in one plastic bag. There are 265 parts inside which should assemble into a model with 471mm wingspan. Let's open everything and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with the smaller version of the same aircraft.

I think we can start with large frame which carries two wing halves. Note that flaps are premolded and only ailerons are separate.

Tail section should be glued out of two halves. The same can be said about tailwings, elevators and rudder. There are guiding pins inside which will help you with alignment.

This frame comes in two, as we get both engines out of the box. Molding quality looks great and it might be a good idea to show one of the engines on the finished model.

Kit also features plenty of interior parts. I have no doubt that we will also see aftermarket PE for even more fine details.

Nevertheless, here you can see that fuselage rear door is premolded and can't be opened on the model. You can try to cut it out, but such thing will require careful work.

Inside you will find nice interior details which looks suitable for this scale. It might be a good idea to try to apply some weathering on those.

Last sprue is also dedicated to wing halves. Recessed panel lines are not too deep, so be careful with layers of primer and paint.

Clear frame is packed into separate plastic bag. Molding quality looks great and there is a masking template in the manual.

Decals sheet is not that big, but features all necessary symbols for several markings. You can see all options on the photo below.

Assembly manual is typical for this brand. I show all pages in the video-review.

New "Sally" should be already available for purchase. In my opinion it looks as good as the small scale brother. For some modelers bigger size might be a decisive factor as it will be easier to work on such project. Nevertheless, you should also account for increased wingspan as this won't be a small build. I also expect to see some aftermarket for this aircraft, which will make whole thing even more impressive. Who knows, maybe we will also get figurines from ICM for airfield diorama. :)
