Trumpeter 1/24 P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback (02427)

This time we are going to talk about Trumpeter 1/24 P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback (02427). Yes, this is yet another "Jug", but it comes in very big sizing. Real aircraft is not that small either, so it should be interesting to see what is actually copied in today's set. Overall packaging is huge, and it barely fit on my table as you would see in the video. Nevertheless, all frames are nicely sealed into separate bags, and there is plenty of space to avoid unnecessary damage. Let's open everything and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with Razorback in smaller size.

Watch this video-review where I show all parts even closer.

We are going to start with wing mechanization. Here you can notice that each element should be glued out of two halves.

The same can be said about tail surfaces. Molding quality looks great on those parts, and there are guiding pins to help you with assembly.

Some of you mentioned that it is similar to "smaller" P-47 from the same brand, and we have full air intake system included. Note also thin parts which will require due care.

Trumpeter provides a choice of weapons which can be placed on the aircraft. Machine guns will be used in wings, and barrels look fine for this scale.

Yes, engine parts fit on two frames. Overall design is straightforward, but assembly process will take some time.

It is worth spending a bit on weathering too because engine can be exposed on this model. You will see the part on the next photos in the article.

Some of those panels will be used for main wheel wells. Manufacturer designed it with special slots for easier installation.

Kit features several types of propellers, but those will be used in other versions as you can guess.

Supercharger piping is nicely copied out of the box. The only question is how to show it on the finished model. :)

Trumpeter also included fuel tanks here. You have a choice out of several types, and there are also rocket launchers too.

Cockpit should be assembled out of separate panels. There are some premolded features, but it might be good to check references too.

Here we can see more of prop types. Note also the special "support" for main wing. It might be also smart idea to get some metal bar to reinforce the whole structure.

Each wing should be glued out of two halves. Note that mechanisation is separate, what might be handy for some ideas.

Internal structure is also nicely copied out of the box. There are guiding pins which should help with alignment of those large parts.

External features include recessed panel lines and riveting. They are looking fine, and I show them in detail in the video-review.

Both fuselage halves are molded together with tail fin. External features are exactly the same as what we saw on wing parts.

Inside you will find nicely detailed structure, but it is more for the rigidity than for the look of the finished model. Of course, we also get guiding pins here.

Separate printout highlights all the features of the kit.

I am not that happy to see vinyl parts here. Wheels are looking okay, but this model will definitely benefit from some 3D-printed aftermarket.

Even more strange to see machine gun belts out of rubber too.

Unpainted PE fret will be used for few external parts and also seatbelts. It looks fine, but aftermarket will come up with way more sophisticated add-ons for sure.

This one was unexpected for me - clear cowling is definitely a cool feature to get in this big model. It should come handy for exposing the engine and what is inside.

Another clear sprue carries mix of parts. Yes, you get instrument panels here as well, and those should assemble into a cool thing after combining with decals.

Canopy is separated into two parts. Molding quality is great and of course you can open the cockpit.

Yes, masks are included here, and this is definitely a useful item for a precise paintwork on your build.

Decals sheet is surprisingly compact for this scale. You will find all necessary symbols for two markings as well as cockpit decals.

Marking guide is printed in color and includes two options. Assembly manual is typical for Truimpeter, you can check all pages in the video-review.

New big Thunderbolt should be already available for purchase. Price is expected in the range of 100-120EUR, what is more than reasonable for such huge model. In my opinion it carries all necessary things inside, and it can turn into interesting project for sure. The only thing to remember is that wingspan here is more than half a meter. :) I also hope that we will see aftermarket for this kit, as there are plenty of opportunities for various upgrades.
Thank you for your help in getting this kit!

  • Masks included
