ICM 1/48 Jig Dog JD-1D Invader with KDA-1 Drone (48289)

Today we are going to talk about ICM 1/48 Jig Dog JD-1D Invader with KDA-1 Drone (48289). It is easy to guess that the new kit comes as yet another version of the big twin engine aircraft model. Previous releases proved to be nice, but this time we get combo of the aircraft and drone in one box. Such build might be demanding on your skills, so it will be interesting to see how the things are copied. There are 239 parts for assembly of the model with 448 mm wingspan. Let's open this box and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with the previous solo release of this kit.

Watch this video-review where I show all parts even closer.

First frame is dedicated to wing parts. As you can notice, each side should be assembled out of two halves.

Here you can see the new frame, which carries underwing fuel tank installed in order to counter-balance drone on the opposite side.

Next we see mix of various parts for the landing gear, wing mechanization and some other elements. Overall molding quality looks fine.

Two fuselage halves come on their separate frame. Both are molded with tail fin, but without nose section. Note that tailwings should be glued out of two halves.

Nose area should be glued out of several parts. Be careful while fitting this section to the fuselage.

I am glad to see that ICM also included both engines, just like in the previous releases. This is a great opportunity to expose one of the engines or both. :)

Fuselage has some top and lower panels molded separately. This should help you avoid possible seams, but it will be also important to fit them properly.

As you remember, each side of the wing should be glued out of two halves. Note also large spars which are used to support both sides. I would recommend to add some metal rod in order to have everything even more solid.

Drone comes on its own sprue, just like in the solo release. Overall parts division is classic, but I would recommend to be careful in the air intake area.

Each landing gear wheel should be glued out of two halves. I would recommend to replace those with resin aftermarket for even more impressive appearance.

Clear frame come in the separate bags in order to avoid possible scratches. Molding quality looks great and there is a masks template in the manual. Decals sheet carries all necessary symbols for two markings. Printing quality looks fine.

Assembly manual is typical for this brand. You can check all pages in the video-review.

Big combo-set should be already available for purchase. In my opinion it is an interesting choice for modelers who are not afraid of challenges and ready to work on something big. It is great to see almost all necessary things copied and included in this model, so you just need to carefully assemble and paint your JD-1D. Of course, there is also some space for improvement, so if you are ready to spend a bit more - then definitely get some aftermarket for such build.
