This review will tell you more about Tamiya 1/72 F-14D Tomcat (60795). New small scale release comes as yet another great offering from the famous brand. Real aircraft doesn't need an extra introduction, so it is worth mentioning that whole set is new-tooled. We saw its bigger 1/48 scale brother earlier, and now smaller release is available for purchase. Keep in mind that even in this scale finished model will have 272mm wingspan. Overall packaging is typical for this brand, so all frames are sorted into separate plastic bags. Let's open them and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with the bigger version from the same brand.

Watch this video-review where I show all parts even closer.
First frame carries the main problem of this kit, at least in my opinion. Yes, that's the nose section which should be glued out of two halves. Note that even nose cone is premolded and divided here.
Yes, inside you will find some guiding elements, but those are not enough to get you a smooth finish overall.
Nice surprise comes in form of additional armament, which is supplied in the standard package. Just be sure to check the loadout scheme for a better result.
Top fuselage half comes on its own frame. External features look great, and some panels are molded separately.
Lower half will require addition of main wheel well parts as well as front section of each air intake.
Cockpit and nose wheel well are molded as one-piece tub-like parts. I have no doubt that we will see aftermarket for those areas, but of course it will cost you extra money.
Each wing should be glued out of two halves. Mechanism is movable thanks to polycaps and gearing.
Clear parts look great out of the box. You can copy open cockpit with those, and it might be handy for some build ideas.
Yes, masks are included, and this is definitely a useful bonus for nice paintwork on your model.
Small screwdriver and polycaps will be used for the wing mechanism.
Kit features two decals sheets. First one is dedicated to main symbols and has segmentation which will help during the building process.
Second one is occupied with stencils and even cockpit decals as well as grease marks for the wing.
Marking guide is printed in color as large poster. This one might be cool to put on the wall. You can see all options on the photo below.
There is also a separate reference brochure, but I would rather recommend to find more reference photos for your marking pick.
Assembly manual is typical for this brand. You can check all pages in the video-review.
New Tomcat should be already available for purchase. In my opinion it is a great choice for modeler who didn't have a space for a bigger set. Overall quality looks on par, even though there are still some questionable design decisions. Well, with some care you can get a nice copy of the famous aircraft. Moreover, it is good that Tamiya included few bonuses which will have influence on the appearance.
Thank you for your help in getting this kit.Pros
- Nice molding quality
- Clever parts division
- Great decals
