Special Hobby 1/72 Tachikawa Ki-54 Otsu/Hickory (SH72445)

This time we are going to check Special Hobby 1/72 Tachikawa Ki-54 Otsu/Hickory (SH72445). Kit comes as yet another version of Japanese twin-engine aircraft. As you remember, we reviewed the previous release as well. Packaging is typical for this brand and all frames come in one plastic bag. Let's open it and take a closer look at all parts.
By the way, here you can read review with Stuka in the same scale.

First frame is dedicated to wing parts. Of course, wing mechanization is molded in, so you won't be able to build it in different configuration.

Next we see mix of various parts. Engine inserts might look simple, but in my opinion this element should look fine on the finished model.

Floor is molded as one-piece panel, so it should be easy to get everything in the right spot. Note that interior will be quite detailed on this model.

Last grey plastic sprue is dedicated to fuselage halves and engine gondolas. External features look great, but you will have to be careful during assembly as there are no guiding elements inside.

Clear frame comes in the separate plastic bag. Molding quality looks great, but there are no masks included. You have to buy them as separate set from Special Hobby.

Decals look fine and there are some symbols for the interior. Assembly manual is typical for this brand and you can check all pages in the video-review.

Today's aircraft version should be already available for purchase. In my opinion it is an interesting choice for modelers who would like to build something different in small scale. Model should look great out of the box, but this is definitely not the right choice for beginners. There are some things that should be considered and they will require certain experience from modeler.
Get this and other kits on official Special Hobby website.

Pros

  • Nice molding quality
  • Clever parts division
  • Great decals

Cons

  • No masks for clear parts
  • Fuselage might be tricky to assemble
