Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Thunderbolt (90)

This time we are going to talk about Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Thunderbolt (90). Kit doesn't need an extra introduction as it was on sale for some time already. Nevertheless, now we have way better offering from Miniart, so I compared both and also recorded the review of the kit itself. Packaging is typical here, and all frames come in separate plastic bags. Let's open everything and take a closer look together.
By the way, here you can read review with better P-47 from Miniart.

Watch this video-review where I show all parts even closer.

First frame is dedicated to wing parts. Note that ailerons are molded in, while flaps come as separate parts. External features include recessed panels and rivets. For all rivets on the model it is recommended to buy set from HGW.

Next frame brings one-piece cowling which is really nice to have on aircraft model. Underfuselage tank should be glued out of two halves. Propeller is separated into several blades which should be combined together.

More fuel tanks and rocket launchers come on another frame. Of course, you won't use everything at once, but it is always good to have external armament included in standard package.

Both fuselage halves are molded without tail fin. Overall shape looks fine to me, but I didn't check it against some drawings.

Clear frame is packed separately and looks great out of the box. Of course, you can assemble open cockpit with those parts. Note that there are no masks in the kit.

Decals sheet is quite big and includes all necessary symbols, even some for the cockpit. Assembly manual is typical for this brand. I show all pages in the video-review.

Today's Thunderbolt is available for some time already. In my opinion it is still quite fine for modelers who don't want something extra. Keep in mind that price stayed the same, and it is easier to get new set from Miniart and enjoy some modern molding and more details. As for today's set, you will need some extras in order to get something comparable with Miniart kit. Of course, it will cost extra money, so the final decision is after you.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS WHICH MADE THIS REVIEW POSSIBLE!

Pros

  • Nice molding quality
  • Clever parts division
  • One-piece cowling
